1st-Nov-2007 10:39 am - My new JEWELRY site!
Hi all,

I'm a full-time writer now. You all know that. But what you may not know is that I ran a family jewelry business for many years and even wrote a book about gems, diamonds, and precious metals for QVC a few years back.

So, I have launched a site that makes use of my knowledge and offers some interesting info to people who might be curious about gems, or diamonds, or pearls, etc.

It's called KNOW WHAT THE JEWELER KNOWS and it can be found at:

Stop by for a visit!
21st-Sep-2007 10:58 am - Happy Birthday Steve
Happy 60th birthday, Stephen King, with my wishes to you for another 60 years of health, happiness, and creativity!

Steve
3rd-Sep-2007 11:00 am - Happy Labor Day
Seems like ages, doesn't it? I've been flat out for the past several months working on four books at once and now I'm down to 2, probably 3 by next week. But that's kind of like a vacay for me. So I thought I'd post and say hey, what up? to my friends.

Here are some random thoughts:

1. John Edwards just blew his chance at the Democratic nomination. How? By proposing a universal health care plan that would force people to go to the doctor if they wanted to participate in the coverage. I'm for socialized some things - socialized defense is good, socialized highways are good, and so forth. But to demand that people go to the doctor is, I think, more than the American people would accept. And then we'd have even more uninsured than we do now, and even bigger problems.

2. I have a dear friend who just got her degree in Graphic Design and she's facing the classic problem of new graduates. Companies require 2-5 years experience, but no one will hire her so she can get the experience. And interning is out of the question. There are these things called bills that need to be paid, and thus, we work for compensation, not for free. She's really talented, too, and has a great portfolio, but is in a job that has nothing to do with her field just to earn a living.

3. I'm thinking of writing a sequel to Dialogues. Actually, I'm doing more than thinking about it. I wrote the first three chapters to see how the book would flow, and it seems to be working.

4. I love Wal-Mart. The prices are unbelievable. Examples: 1 quart rubbing alcohol anywhere else: around $2.99. Wal-Mart's price: $1.68. A bottle of thirty 50 mg. COQ10 anywhere else: around $15.00. Wal-Mart's price: $6.99. Plus, I recently bought the movies Heat, Dogma, and the Stephen King miniseries Rose Red for five bucks each.

I hope to post more frequently. I do. But if I don't, please know I appreciate all of you taking the time to click and see if I have anything to say. So, "I don't know Butchie, instead" and catch you later. (That line is from David Milch's John From Cincinnati, which was a brilliant failure, in my opinion.)
15th-Jun-2007 11:42 am - Interview with Tony Soprano
EXCLUSIVE
An Interview with Tony Soprano
Special to the New Jersey Messenger

-------------
It was dumb, I know, but in the end it was worth it.

Several things could have happened, including getting beat up, killed, or simply ignored, which probably would have hurt the worst.

One of my “associates” (which is a nice way of saying Mel the homeless guy who lives in a cardboard box a block away from Holsten’s) called me the other night to tell me had seen Tony Soprano walk into the neighborhood ice cream parlor and sit down.

By the time I got there and peeked in the window, I could see that his entire family was with him, and that they were eating. I recognized Meadow Soprano’s car across the street (yes, reporters keep track of the cars belonging to high-profile local people and their family members), so I stood a couple of doors down from the diner and waited. And waited. After more than an hour, I decided that either the Soprano family really loves to eat, or they all snuck out a back door.

But Italian Princess Meadow’s car was still parked across the street, so I pulled the collar of my coat tighter and continued to wait.

Three Boy Scouts and a guy with grey hair came out, followed by a couple of black guys, both eating a sfogliatelle, and then a guy in a Members Only jacket I thought they had stopped making back around the time of the Hoover administration.

Each time the Holsten’s door bell subsequently rang, I looked, but never saw a Soprano. But then the bell rang one more time and out walked young A.J. Soprano and his sister Meadow, followed immediately by Carmela Soprano and then the big guy himself, Tony Soprano.

It’s now or never, I thought, so I walked quickly toward the family (which I immediately realized was an enormous mistake when Tony looked toward me and not only immediately placed himself between me and Carmela, but also put his hand in his jacket pocket).

I stopped in my tracks, put both my hands up in the air as high as I could reach, and said, “Excuse me, Tony? Can I talk to you a minute? I’m friends with Pat Parisi’s son Patrick.” (Which I am.)

Tony turned to his kids and said, “You two go home.” They looked at me, and then Meadow crossed the street heading for her car and AJ started walking down the block.

Tony then said to Carmela, “Where’d you park?”

“Just over there,” she said, pointing to a new Porsche Cayenne.

“Okay. Go on home.”

“Tony,” she said with more than a little anxiety in her voice and a few hurled eye-daggers at me.

Tony put his hand on her neck, kissed her on the cheek, smiled, and said, “It’s okay. Go ahead. I won’t be long.”

Once we were alone, Tony’s face turned to stone and he said, “Yeah?”

“I’m a reporter with the New Jersey Messenger, Tony, and I was wondering if ...”

Tony turned and began walking away.

I followed him, talking as I walked. “Hey, come on, Tony. You don’t have to answer anything you don’t want to answer. And I’m not looking to do a hatchet job. I just thought maybe there’s something you might want people to know from you yourself. There are a lot of stories going around and I’m just trying to get to the truth.”

Tony stopped and looked at me. “You’re friends with Patrick?”

I nodded. “We were in law school together.”

Tony visibly loosened up. “You know he’s gonna be my son-in-law?”

I shook my head. “No. I hadn’t heard that. Congratulations.”

“Thanks. So what do you want?”

Now or never. No risk, no reward. “Any chance we can take a booth in Holsten’s for twenty minutes? My treat.”

Tony chuckled. “Your treat, huh? Sure you can afford it? I know what reporters make.”

I laughed and replied, “Yeah, Holsten’s I can afford.”

Tony looked steadily at me for a minute and then finally said, “Okay. Fifteen minutes. And the first question I don’t like I’m outta there.” I nodded.

And that’s how I found myself sitting in a booth across from New Jersey mob boss Tony Soprano. We ordered coffees and Tony flipped through the jukebox but didn’t play anything.

“So?” he said after the coffees arrived.

“First, please accept my condolences on the loss of your nephew and brother-in-law.” I knew that Tony’s nephew Christopher Moltisanti had recently died in an SUV accident, and that his sister Janice’s husband Bobby Baccalieri had been gunned down in a model train store a week or so earlier.

“Thanks.”

“How’s Sylvio Dante doing?”

“He’s gonna be fine,” Tony replied with a touch of anger in his voice. Dante had been shot outside the Bada Bing, the Lodi topless bar (Tony Soprano is rumored to be a silent partner in the Bing) and was reportedly in an irreversible coma.

“Okay,” I said. “Can I ask you a couple of questions about your Uncle Junior?”

Tony glared at me and sipped his coffee ... but didn’t say no, so I plunged ahead. “I understand he’s in a state facility now?”

“Yeah, so?”

“How’s he doing?”

“He’s looney tunes, that’s how he’s doing.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be. He’s an arrogant prick.”

Change the subject. “Is there anything you’d like to say about the murder of Phil Leotardo?”

“Like what?”

“Well, I know you two knew each other.”

“Oh, yeah? How do you know that?”

“The Cleaver premiere party.”

“You were at that?”

“No, but someone I know was and they said they saw you and Phil talking like old friends.”

“I knew Phil.”

“How do you feel about him getting killed?”

“How do I feel? How do you think I feel? I’m sorry for his wife, Patty, and his grandkids. His family.”

Dare I? “Y’know, Tony, some people are saying Phil was killed by ... by ...”

“By who?”

“Um, New Jersey people. Friends of yours.”

Tony leaned back and burst into a wide grin. “Oh, yeah? Well, that’s a felonious belief.”

“Felonious?”

“Yeah. A mistake.”

“So you don’t know what happened to Phil and you had nothing to do with it?”

Tony sipped his coffee and when he put down the cup he said very calmly, “Of course not. All I know is what I read in the papers.”

“Okay. Listen, I know you want to get home to your family, so I’ll just ask one more question. What’s next for Tony Soprano?”

Tony looked at me and was quiet for a moment. He then leaned in and said softly, “I’ll tell you what’s next, pal. What’s next is you’re gonna write a very flattering article about your interview with Tony Soprano, and you’re gonna emphasize that he’s a retired waste management consultant who spends time with his family, and that he’s looking forward to many happy and content years to come.” He stared me in the eyes and said, “You got that?”

I nodded, and with a bit of a catch in my voice, replied, “I got it. And thanks, Tony.”

Tony leaned back and glanced at a waitress passing by holding a bowl of onion rings. “Mmm, onion rings,” he said. He then looked hard at me and said, “Best in the state far as I’m concerned.”

And then he got up and left me sitting alone in the booth.

I didn’t turn around when I heard the bell ring as he exited Holsten’s.

PRAYER FOR TODAY

Dear Father, please keep an eye on me and hear me when I call.

Please help me get through each day without succumbing to the dark side.

Please let me not be a hater.

Please teach me what to ignore, and what to pay attention to.

Please let me have - in all things - at least what I need, less than what I want, and more than I deserve.

Please let me realize that all I need is love, and that love is all I need.

Please grant me patience, tolerance, compassion, kindness, courage, civility, and patience.

Please help me understand the difference between time and money, fear and caution, wants and needs, ignorance and laziness, and truth and honesty.

Please keep me healthy in all ways.

And above all, please grant me the wisdom to recognize that the eyeblink of my life can mean a lot, do a lot, and can change the world and those around me.

AMEN.
18th-Apr-2007 09:41 am - Congrats Bob!
Heartfelt congratulations to my dear friend Bob Nappe on the court decision awarding him his East Haven, CT police officer job back. Bob is a police officer who served a year in Iraq training Iraqi police officers.

He was refused a leave of absence by the police department and, instead, forced to retire so that his wife would receive retirement benefits if was killed in Iraq. Thankfully, he made it back okay and now a judge has ordered the town to reinstate him in his former position.

Two Connecticut laws were passed protecting police officers who wanted to serve in Iraq, but the town rejected them and battled them in court, claiming they were unconstitutional.

Bob fought for three years to get his job back and I'm delighted that his efforts resulted in a happy outcome.

19th-Jan-2007 07:40 pm - Jim Cole's The Night Before
My good friend, Jim Cole, writer and director of the "Dollar Baby" short Stephen King film, "The Last Rung on the Ladder," has a DVD out of his award-winning short film, "The Night Before."

Jim wrote the film, and it was directed by Jay Holben, who also directed the film version of Stephen King's poem, "Paranoid: A Chant." (The film is called simply "Paranoid.")

I'm not posting this just to plug a movie by two dear friends, although "The Night Before" is absolutely terrific. I'm posting it because proceeds from sales of the DVD are going to the Association for Bladder Exstrophy. From the website:

"The Night Before" is a short film written by James Cole, based on his real-life experience with exstrophy. It is now available on DVD for purchase.

“Danny Cole has spent much of his life in hospitals. Facing yet another surgery, he relishes scaring his roommates Mike and young Martin with the horrors of what awaits them. Yet this veteran hides his own fears, and before morning Martin will help Danny learn to trust and find surprising strength.”

"The Night Before" is an inspiring tale of how human compassion can conquer childhood fears. Directed by Jay Holben, the film has been shown at both the ABC and HEA Conferences, and most recently won the Audience Award for Best Dramatic Short at the Valley Film Festival in Los Angeles, California.

Hi all,

Just want to let you all know that my next book - George Washington's Leadership Lessons - which I wrote with James Rees, the Executive Director of Mount Vernon, is at the printer and on track for January 22, 2007 publication.

The book is in three parts. The first part looks at the 15 traits of an effective leader (courage, honesty, determination, etc.) and each trait is discussed by citing specific incidents in George Washington's life during which he exemplified that trait.

Part II is Washington's complete Rules of Civility, annotated with real-life contemporary stories in which the Rules were - or were not, followed.

And Part III is a 12,000-word essay on Washington as an entrepreneur - a side of him many are not aware of. He was a major real estate investor, invented agricultural equipment, experimented with exotic crops, bred animals, ran a gristmill and distillery, and had a phenomenally lucrative fishing operation.

This link takes you to the book's Amazon page. Signed copies will be available after the book is released.

2nd-Dec-2006 12:33 pm - Love Actually
From the movie Love Actually:

Whenever I get gloomy with the state of the world, I think about the arrivals gate at Heathrow Airport. General opinion's starting to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed, but I don't see that. It seems to me that love is everywhere. Often it's not particularly dignified or newsworthy, but it's always there - fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, old friends. When the planes hit the Twin Towers, as far as I know none of the phone calls from the people on board were messages of hate or revenge - they were all messages of love. If you look for it, I've got a sneaky feeling you'll find that love actually is all around.

No More Keeping My Feet On The Ground
Coldplay

Sometimes I wake up and I'm falling asleep
I think that maybe the curtains are closing on me
But I wake up; yes I wake up smiling

Sometimes I feel the chance is surprising
Surprisingly good to be moving around
So I wake up; yes I wake up smiling

So what? I feel fine
I'm ok; I've seen the lighter side of life
I'm alright, I feel good
So I'll go and I'll try to start moving

Sometimes I wake up and I'm falling asleep
But I've gotta get going
So much that I'm wanting to do
But I wake up smiling

And this could be my last chance
Of saving my human sense
And this could be my last chance
No more keeping my feet on the ground

Sometimes I feel the chance is surprising
Surprisingly good to be moving around
And I move; I wake up smiling

So what? I feel fine
I feel okay; I've seen the lighter side of life
I'm alright, I feel good
So I'll go, well it's time to start moving on

And this could be my last chance
Of saving my human sense
And this could be my last chance
So no more keeping my feet on the ground

I'm not gonna keep on; I'm not gonna keep on moving
And I'm not gonna keep on; I'm not gonna keep on moving

George Washington's 1789 Thanksgiving Proclamation

Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor; and Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me "to recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness":

Now, therefore, I do recommend and assign Thursday, the 26th day of November next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country previous to their becoming a nation; for the signal and manifold mercies and the favorable interpositions of His providence in the course and conclusion of the late war; for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty which we have since enjoyed; for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enable to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national one now lately instituted for civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and, in general, for all the great and various favors which He has been pleased to confer upon us.

And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech Him to pardon our national and other transgressions; to enable us all whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually; to render our National Government a blessing to all the people by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed; to protect and guide all governments, peace, and concord; to promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us; and, generally to grant unto all mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as He alone knows to be best.

Given under my hand, at the city of New York, the 3d day of October, A.D. 1789.

The Paradoxical Commandments
by Dr. Kent M. Keith

People are illogical, unreasonable, and self-centered.
Love them anyway.

If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish ulterior motives.
Do good anyway.

If you are successful, you will win false friends and true enemies.
Succeed anyway.

The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow.
Do good anyway.

Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable.
Be honest and frank anyway.

The biggest men and women with the biggest ideas can be shot down by the smallest men and women with the smallest minds.
Think big anyway.

People favor underdogs but follow only top dogs.
Fight for a few underdogs anyway.

What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight.
Build anyway.

People really need help but may attack you if you do help them.
Help people anyway.

Give the world the best you have and you'll get kicked in the teeth.
Give the world the best you have anyway.

Hope Is The Thing With Feathers
Emily Dickinson

Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul,
And sings the tune without the words,
And never stops at all,

And sweetest in the gale is heard;
And sore must be the storm
That could abash the little bird
That kept so many warm.

I've heard it in the chillest land,
And on the strangest sea;
Yet, never, in extremity,
It asked a crumb of me.

1st-Oct-2006 09:28 am - Wikipedia
Do you read Wikipedia? Of course you do.

I found a site that allows you to pick whatever articles from Wikipedia you like and they will format them, paginate them, and print and bind them in a book. You can make your book as short or as long as you like. They even provide a complete Index for your book. And the prices for this service are very reasonable. It's called PediaPress and the link is below. (And I have nothing to do with this company - just thought the idea was cool and wanted to share it.)

Cats are dangerous companions for writers because cat watching is a near-perfect method of writing avoidance.

21st-Sep-2006 09:46 am - Harry
A favorite prayer of Harry Truman's. Worthy sentiments.

Help me to be, to think, to act what is right, because it is right; make me truthful, honest, and honorable in all things; make me intellectually honest, for the sake of right and honor and without thought of reward to me. Give me the ability to be charitable, forgiving, and patient with my fellow men - help me to understand their motives and their shortcomings - even as you understand mine! Amen, Amen, Amen.
17th-Sep-2006 10:15 am - Charles Grant RIP
This sad news just in from my friend Jonathan Reitan:

It is with deep sadness and regret that I inform you of the loss of one of the Grandmasters and Godfathers of Horror, Charles L. Grant, who died of a heart attack on Sept. 15 in his home shortly after returning from a 2 1/2 year stay in the hospital. He was 64 years old.

Past President of the Horror Writers Association and Executive Secretary and Eastern Regional Director of the Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America, Charles L. Grant was the author of nearly 60 novels including The Pet, Jackals, Raven, the Black Oak series, the Millenium series, the Oxrun Station series, 3 X-Files novels, several short story collections and was the editor of the anthologies Shadows (10 volumes), Graystone Bay (4 volumes) and the anthologies Gallery of Horror, Fears, Horrors, Terrors, and many more. He is the winner of 2 Nebula Awards, 1 World Fantasy Award and has been nominated for more than 15 Bram Stoker and World Fantasy Awards. Grant received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Horror Writers Association in 2000, was given the World Horror Convention Grandmaster Award in 2002 and was crowned a NeCon Legend in 1994.

"...his Shadows anthologies were among my earliest introductions to adult horror..." - Poppy Z. Brite

"We've lost a great one, an amazing writer and editor, and a friend beyond measure." - Rick Hautala

"...another great voice in our beloved genre has been silenced." - Kealan Patrick Burke (editor of the Charles L. Grant tribute anthology Quietly Now)

"Charlie gave me my very first review in the biz...I was always thankful for his kindness." - Tom Piccirilli

"...he was one of the kindest, gentlest guys around...I find myself missing him horribly today." - Christopher Golden

"The nice thing about our corner of the world of writers and readers is that you can make up a second, nicer family - a family that actually understands you. Charlie was a generous guy, a powerful writer and a great editor, but a lot of times he felt like the older brother I never had. I'm going to miss him terribly." - Craig Shaw Gardner

"Good-bye, old friend. I can still hear your voice in my memories." - Thomas F. Monteleone

"Charlie, old friend, go in peace. You will be well remembered, as you were so well loved." - Bob Booth (founder of Necon and co-founder of World Fantasy Convention)

His novels, stories and anthology's have influenced a generation of writers and introduced a legion of readers to the world of horror fiction and because of this his legend will remain strong and he will never be forgotten. Rest in peace Charlie and thank you for the horrors.

Let It Be Forgotten
by Sarah Teasdale

Dedicated to D, who has things she wants to forget

Let it be forgotten, as a flower is forgotten,
Forgotten as a fire that once was singing gold.
Let it be forgotten forever and ever,
Time is a kind friend, he will make us old.

If anyone asks, say it was forgotten
Long and long ago,
As a flower, as a fire, as a hushed footfall
In a long-forgotten snow.

6th-Sep-2006 11:07 am - Couple of things
1. I have never watched Dane Cook's HBO series Tourgasm, but I did catch his stand-up concert Vicious Circle recently and liked it a lot. He's got talent. I laughed out loud several times and was very impressed by the quality of the writing. The concert was excellent and I'll be watching out for more by him.

2. Katie Couric debuted as anchor of the CBS Evening News last night. Talk about much ado about nothing! She was perfectly fine, and a professional, but the hype about the new set and music (written by Titanic's James Horner!!!!) sort of fell flat when we saw that it was simply a competently produced, moderately informative network news broadcast. Katie was as good as always, and the show went fine. But that's about it. There was nothing groundbreaking or revolutionary about the broadcast, and I guess the lesson to come away with is always take the hype with a grain of salt.

(BTW, my "News Pick of the Day" feature is on hiatus. I'm writing three books at once and am being parsimonious with my time when possible. :-)

Letter from the Federal Convention President to the President of Congress, Transmitting the Constitution

September 17, 1787

Sir,

We have now the honor to submit to the consideration of the United States in Congress assembled, that Constitution which has appeared to us the most advisable.

The friends of our country have long seen and desired, that the power of making war, peace, and treaties, that of levying money and regulating commerce, and the correspondent executive and judicial authorities should be fully and effectually vested in the general government of the Union: But the impropriety of delegating such extensive trust to one body of men is evident -- Hence results the necessity of a different organization.

It is obviously impractical in the federal government of these states, to secure all rights of independent sovereignty to each, and yet provide for the interest and safety of all: Individuals entering into society, must give up a share of liberty to preserve the rest. The magnitude of the sacrifice must depend as well on situation and circumstances, as on the object to be obtained. It is at all times difficult to draw with precision the line between those rights which must be surrendered, and those which may be reserved; and on the present occasion this difficulty was encreased by a difference among the several states as to their situation, extent, habits, and particular interests.

In all our deliberations on this subject we kept steadily in our view, that which appears to us the greatest interest of every true American, the consolidation of our Union, in which is involved our prosperity, felicity, safety, perhaps our national existence. This important consideration, seriously and deeply impressed on our minds, led each state in the Convention to be less rigid on points of inferior magnitude, than might have been otherwise expected; and thus the Constitution, which we now present, is the result of a spirit of amity, and of that mutual deference and concession which the peculiarity of our political situation rendered indispensable.

That it will meet the full and entire approbation of every state is not perhaps to be expected; but each will doubtless consider that had her interest been alone consulted, the consequences might have been particularly disagreeable or injurious to others; that it is liable to as few exceptions as could reasonably have been expected, we hope and believe; that it may promote the lasting welfare of that country so dear to us all, and secure her freedom and happiness, is our most ardent wish.

With great respect, We have the honor to be, Sir, Your Excellency's most obedient and humble servants,

George Washington, President By unanimous Order of the Convention.

His Excellency, the President of Congress
4th-Sep-2006 12:01 pm - What it means to love
What it means to love
by Woody Allen

To love is to suffer. To avoid suffering one must not love. But then one suffers from not loving. Therefore to love is to suffer, not to love is to suffer. To suffer is to suffer. To be happy is to love. To be happy then is to suffer. But suffering makes one unhappy. Therefore, to be unhappy one must love, or love to suffer, or suffer from too much happiness. I hope you're getting this down.
